Name/Title
New York geometric coverlet woven for Perthenia Swan, 1829, doubleweaveEntry/Object ID
2014.1.007Description
This geometric coverlet was woven in two panels, which are not currently joined. It has applied on the side and bottom. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of dark blue wool with a layer of undyed cotton. The pattern has a 11 block pattern with script; this is a fancy pattern that would require 44 shafts if woven on an ordinary shaft loom.
Perthenia Swan was born on January 31, 1779 in Brookfield, Massachusetts to Joshua Abbot (a veteran of the Revolutionary War) and Azubah Nash (the daughter on an ensign) (Conway, Mass. Register of Births; Find A Grave). In the early 1800s, the Abbot family moved to New York State, where Perthenia would spend the rest of her life (The Nash Family, Or, Records of the Decendants of Thomas Nash of New Haven, Connecticut, 1640). She married Seth Swan and together they had six children: Chauncey, Austin, Diantha, Seth, Alonzo, and Cornelia. The Swan family lived in Phelps, Ontario County, New York. Seth Swan Sr. died in 1841 (Find A Grave). Perthenia then lived with her son Austin and his wife, Hannah and their family (1850 census). Perthenia passed away in 1854 (Find A Grave).Category
