Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Martin B. Breneman in Washington Township, York County, Pennsylvania for Sarah Spahr in 1839. The two cornerblocks read "Martin B. Breneman Washingto Township York Count PA 1839 Sarah Spahr" and repeating in the borders is "EAGLE." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a "double rose" centerfield pattern with rosette motifs that repeats horizontally four times. It has a border of eagles, trees, and rose bushes on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides; the original self-fringe on the bottom edge has completely worn away. The top edge of the coverlet has a green stripe that does not follow the overall color sequence. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
