Description

This geometric coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has self-fringe on the bottom and applied cotton fringe on the sides. The overshot (floatwork) weave structure combines undyed cotton plainweave ground cloth with red and greenwool pattern weft. The pattern has four blocks and requires a 4-shaft loom. There are two irregularities in the design of the coverlet. The placement of red and green weft is reversed in a 12" band at the botton edge, making green more prominent than red. At the top end of the coverlet, the pattern features a band of O's instead of the X's that are found elsewhere. Both of these irregularities are repeated perfectly in both panels, such that it appears to be a deliberate design choice rather than an accidental error.
