This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by David Beil in New Hamburg, Mercer County, Pennsylvania in 1849. The two cornerblocks read "Made by D. Beil New Hamburg for [client blank] 1849."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a floral centerfield pattern with floral cross medallions in a grid of leaves; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. The coverlet has a flower vine border on the sides and bottom border of large leaf fronds and star flowers. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, pink, dark blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with applied fringe on the bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Collection
