This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by George Nicklas in Chambersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania for Elizabeth Shearer in 1840. The two cornerblocks read "Elizabeth Shearer 1840 G. Nicklas" with "Chambg" repeating along bottom border. The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a "double rose" centerfield pattern with rosette secondary motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally slightly over four times. The coverlet has a distelfink & tree border on the sides and bottom, which are edged with a double row of stars. There is a cotton fabric binding on the top edge. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton supplemental tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Collection
