Entry/Object ID

Description

Red, white, and blue wool and cotton coverlet. It has a pine tree border and snowball/whig rose pattern in centerfield; 3" fringe on three sides; center seam. It is possible that this coverlet was woven by Benjamin Lowry, as it was donated by one of his descendants. Benjamin Lowry was born in 1816 in Stonycreek Twp and died in 1872 in Greenville Twp. He was listed as a weaver. This geometric coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The doubleweave structure combines a layer of dark blue wool with a layer of undyed cotton and red wool. The pattern has four blocks and requires a 16-shaft loom.
