CDP 24.3.AW002Description
Red, Navy, Brown and White Jacquard Coverlet woven in Boonsboro, Maryland in 1849. Two panels joined by a center seam with self-fringe on three sides. Centerfield pattern with geometric starbursts and Lilies of France motif, and border with distelfinks and foliage; 69" x 89”.
The coverlet is signed "John B. Welty" and dated 1849, but Welty died in 1841. This coverlet was likely woven by his widow, Catharine, or possibly by his former neighbor George Oertell.
Belonged to Matilda Ankeney Spickler (1811-1893), the daughter of Henry Ankeney, Jr. and Catherine Miller. She married in 1837 David Spickler (1810-1900), a blacksmith and wagon builder. They resided on the northwest corner of Spickler Road and the National Pike (Route 40), directly across from Captain Samuel Miller and Mary Firey Miller. Samuel Miller and Catherine Miller Ankeney were brother and sister, children of Captain John Miller who fought in the Revolution. The coverlet descended through the family.Collection
