Coverlet, tied beiderwand

Name/Title

Coverlet, tied beiderwand

Entry/Object ID

HS2001.33.5

Description

Unsigned coverlet with weaving mistake along the bottom. The centerfield pattern is double roses with blossom and the border is grapevine. The weaver of this coverlet is unknown. It is possible that this coverlet was woven at Rininger Woolen Mills in Kantner, as similar patterns have appeared on their coverlets. This is unconfirmed and is a possible lead for future research. The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. The "Double Rose" centerfield pattern repeats horizontally twice; it is enlarged as compared to the more common four repeats in other coverlets that use this pattern. It has grapevine borders and self-fringe on the bottom and sides. The coverlet has a dark blue wool pattern on undyed cotton ground. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton ties in a 2:1 warp ratio. The cornerblocks continue the grapevine border and contain no inscription.
