Power-woven coverlet with Washington logo, doubleweaveEntry/Object ID
CDP 26.5.039Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was likely power-woven in a manufactory ca. 1860-1880. It has a portrait of George Washington on horseback in all four corners with no inscription.
The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a center medallion pattern with a central star in a rectangle on diamond check background, with an elaborate floral and leaf border on all sides and Washington in the corners. It has self-fringe on the sides and applied fringe on the bottom. The power-woven doubleweave structure has an unbalanced ground layer of multi-strand undyed cotton warp with thick undyed cotton weft filler. The unbalanced pattern layer combines widely-spaced thin warp with red, orange, dark green, and light green wool, making horizontal color stripes.Collection
