Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by William Fasig in Martinsburg, Clark County, Illinois in 1854. The two cornerblocks read "Made by W. Fasig US Clark Co. Ill. 1854" around a flowerpot. The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a centerfield pattern with alternating rows of ferns, acorn stars, and leaf motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. The coverlet has borders of grapevines and roses, arranged differently on the sides and bottom. Below the bottom border is an edging of diamonds; outside the side borders are edges of alternating diamonds and stars. The coverlet has a dark blue wool pattern on undyed cotton ground with applied fringe on the sides and a hemmed bottom edge. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses undyed cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
