Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Daniel Stephenson in Fairfield, Jefferson County, Iowa in 1869. The two cornerblocks read "Made by D. Stephenson Fairfield Jefferson Co. Iowa 1869."
The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a centerfield pattern of double rose motifs in medallions surrounded by stars and dots; the pattern repeats horizontally three times. It has a border of trees (corn stalks?) with abstract star or snowflake motifs on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red and dark blue wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses undyed supplementary cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
