Description

Figured and fancy tied beiderwand coverlet with borders on 3 sides and self-fringe on all sides. One piece containing two panels yet to be separated. Navy, light blue, and red wool with undyed cotton. Double rose centerfield pattern; Grapevine border on sides and bottom. The coverlet is signed "John B. Welty" and dated 1849, but Welty died in 1841. This coverlet was likely woven by his widow, Catharine, or possibly by his former neighbor George Oertell.
