Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Josiah Sherman (Shearman) at Kendal Mills, New York for L. M. Pierce of Peru, Massachussetts in 1848. The two upside-down cornerblocks read "Wove by J. Shearman at Kendall Mills NY for L. M. Pierce of Peru, Mass AD 1848." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a floral medallion centerfield pattern that repeats horizontally four times. It has different floral borders on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has dark blue pattern wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses undyed cotton tie-down threads in a 4:1 warp ratio.
