Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Mathias Klein in Montgomery County, Ohio in 1844. The two cornerblocks read "The State of Ohio Montgomery County, M. Klein 1844" with "LIBERTY" along the side and bottom borders. The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a "double rose" centerfield pattern with birds, blossoms, and tiny hearts that repeats horizontally four times. It has a grapeleaf border on the sides and bottom edged on three sides with hearts in diamonds and a repeating "liberty" slogan. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of deep pink, dark blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
