Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Charles Gehr in Emmaus, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania in 1839. The left cornerblock reads "Made by C. Fehr in Emaus for 1839," further embroidered with the name "Salome Graver." The right cornerblock reads, "Made by C. Fehr in Emaus Pennsylvania 1839." The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a double leaf and swag centerfield pattern with diamond-centered blossom motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a tulip tree border on the sides and bottom with small diamonds around the outer edges. The coverlet has a red, navy, and gold wool pattern on undyed cotton ground with applied fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 3:1 warp ratio.
