Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by John Hamelton in Jackson Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. The two cornerblocks read "John Hamelton Jackson Township Northumberland County 1837 PAN." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a "Lilies of France" centerfield pattern with sunburst motifs that repeats horizontally four times. It has a distelfink & rosebush border on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of navy, red, and light green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and applied fringe on the bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
