CDP 26.5.008Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by John Hamelton in Jackson Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1839 for P.A.N. The two cornerblocks read, "John Hamilton Jackson T Northumberland County 1839 P.A.N."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a snowflake centerfield pattern with star and diamond motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a rose border on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, gold, and navy wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and applied fringe on the top (the end opposite to the bottom border). The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Context
