Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Joseph Schnee in Freeburg, Snyder County, Pennsylvania in 1838. The two cornerblocks read, "Joseph Schnee Freeburg Penn. 1838." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a double roses centerfield pattern with flower blossom motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a grapevine border on the sides and bottom with small dotted diamonds around the outer edges. The coverlet has a red wool pattern on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
