CDP 26.5.037Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Joseph Turnbaugh in Sugarloaf Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania in 1851. The two cornerblocks read, "Made by Joseph Turnbauck Sugarloaf Luzerne Co. for Penn. 1851." The pattern name "Oak Leaf" is inscribed throughout the centerfield.
The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has an "oak leaf" centerfield pattern with small clover motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a rose and distelfink border on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has a navy, gold, and red wool pattern on undyed cotton ground with no fringe. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Context
