CDP 26.5.041Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Martin Hoke for M. Lau in Dover, York County, Pennsylvania in 1839. The two cornerblocks read "M. Hoke in Dover York Co 1839 M LAU." The bottom border repeats "Patent."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a mini wreath and rosette centerfield pattern; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a grapevine border on the sides and bottom with a star lattice around the outer edges. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, navy, and green wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Context
