Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Martin Hoke for S. Gross in York County, Pennsylvania. The two cornerblocks read "M. Hoke York Pa. 1843 S. Gross." The bottom border reads "Beauty Patent." The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has centerfield pattern of tulip medallions and fern motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a deer border on the sides and bottom with a star lattice around the outer edges. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of gold, navy, and red wool on undyed cotton ground with no fringe. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
