Power-woven coverlet by Philip Schum, doubleweaveEntry/Object ID
CDP 26.5.046Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was power-woven in the factory of Philip Schum in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The border inscription reads "Made by Philip Schum Lancaster Pa."
The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a center medallion pattern with a central flower in a floral wreath on a honeycomb background, with angels in the four corners and an elaborate floral border on all sides. It has self-fringe on the sides and applied fringe on the bottom. The power-woven doubleweave structure has relatively balanced ground layer of undyed cotton warp and weft. The unbalanced pattern layer combines widely-spaced thin cotton warp with red, green and navy wool weft, making horizontal color stripes.Context
