Description

This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by Samuel Dornbach in Sugarloaf Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania in 1846. The two cornerblocks read, "Made by Samuel Dornbach Sugarloaf Luzerne Co. for Penn. 1846." The pattern name "Oak Leaf" is inscribed throughout the centerfield. The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has an "oak leaf" centerfield pattern with small blossom motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a rose and distelfink border on the sides and bottom. The coverlet has a navy wool pattern on undyed cotton ground with applied fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
