Description

This figured & fancy coverlet panel was woven by William Lowmiller in Muncy Borough, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania in 1845. The cornerblock probably reads "Wm Lowmiller Muncy Boro. Ly. Co. 1845"; the date partially is cut off by wear to the bottom edge. The coverlet was woven in two panels, only one of which is extant. It has a "double roses" centerfield pattern with flower blossom motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally twice in this panel. It has a grapevine border on the side and bottom, with a narrow outer border of stars in diamonds. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, dark blue, and green wool on undyed cotton ground. It has remnants of self-fringe on the side and likely originally had self-fringe on the bottom, though the bottom edge has worn away. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.
