Pennsylvania coverlet by William Lowmiller, 1835, tied beiderwandEntry/Object ID
CDP 26.5.022Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by William Lowmiller in Level Corner, Piatt Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania in 1835. The two cornerblocks read, "#Wm# Lowmiller Level Corner. Ly. Co. 1835."
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a "double roses" centerfield pattern with flower blossom motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a grapevine border on the sides and bottom with stars in diamonds around the outer edges. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, green, and navy wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses light blue cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Context
