Pennsylvania coverlet by William Lowmiller, 1845, tied beiderwandEntry/Object ID
CDP 26.4.003Description
This figured & fancy coverlet was woven by William Lowmiller in Muncy Borough, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania in 1845. The two cornerblocks read "Wn Lowmiller Muncy Boro. Ly. Co. 1845" with the date partially obscured.
The coverlet was woven in two panels, which are joined by a center seam. It has a "double roses" centerfield pattern with flower blossom motifs; the pattern repeats horizontally four times. It has a grapevine border on the sides and bottom, with a narrow outer border of diamonds. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of yellow, dark blue, and red wool on undyed cotton ground. It has remnants of self-fringe on the sides and likely originally had self-fringe on the bottom, though the bottom edge has worn away. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses undyed cotton tie-down threads in a 2:1 warp ratio.Context
