Description

Coverlet signed by William Smiley Morgan of Morgan's Woolen Mills in Jenner Twp. There is a repair along the top of the coverlet. The coverlet was woven full-width and has no center seam. It has a center medallion pattern with a large central star in a ring on a field of check, with an inner border of flowers and grapes and a scrollwork outer border on all four sides. The coverlet has horizontal color stripes of red, light blue, and dark blue wool on undyed cotton ground with self-fringe on the sides and applied fringe on the bottom. The tied Beiderwand weave structure uses a 3:1 warp ratio. The inscription in the four corners of the inner border reads "Wm. S. Morgan Somerset Co. 1872."
