Snapshot photograph taken in Fall 1948. Longtime CMU Director of Bands Norman C. Dietz (L) with MSU director of bands Leonard Falcone and his then-future bride, Beryl. This was the year Norm was on sabbatical while completing his Master’s Degree with Prof. Falcone, so he’s actually wearing an MSU uniform. Rex Hewlett ran the CMCE band back home that year. It was quite an achievement for a third year faculty member to be granted a sabbatical but President Anspach had been impressed with Norm’s leadership as a student and advocated for him to earn a tenure-track position when he returned to Central after serving in the Army during WWII.
