1995.2.30Description
Typed letter from Elihu Root to J.G Butler regarding Root's bust for the memorial. Text of letter is as follows:
"My dear Mr. Butler---
I very cheerfully consent to the placing of a bust of myself among the other members of President McKinley’s cabinet in the McKinley Memorial Building at Niles.
I hope very earnestly that Mr. Rhind will succeed in making a statue which represents McKinley As he really was. I have never seen that done in a way that satisfied me either in painting or sculpture. The fine intelligence and feeling of the real man are always destroyed in the portrait by an attempt to make him grand, gloomy, and particular.
With kind regards and good wishes,
I am, Very sincerely yours,
Elihu Root”Collection
