2004 White House Historical Association Christmas Ornament Rutherford B. HayesEntry/Object ID
2015.4.44Description
According to the insert: "The 2004 White House Holiday ornament honors President Rutherford B. Hayes and recreates a snowy scene of a sleigh in winter on the North Lawn of the White House. President Hayes loved the season, and wintry weather invigorated him. He enjoyed taking his family and guests out on sleigh rides in the hills around Washington. Laughter mingled with the jingling of sleigh bells filled the crisp air of the White House grounds. This oval niche ornament sets a nostalgic holiday vignette within a 24 kt. gold finished brass frame. The reverse shimmers with white snowflakes against an enameled royal blue sky. A pragmatic reformer, President Hayes served with integrity and honor. His household represented the model American family dealing with the social and economic challenges of industrialization and urbanization."
The ornament is placed in a small lidded box. The lid of the box features an image of the White House in winter at night with a carriage and people in front of it. The words "Christmas" and "The White House Historical Association" are printed in white on the lid. The words "Ornament 2004" is printed in gold beneath "Christmas." There is a red banner at the bottom of the lid. The ornament is inside the box, resting on an inset of blue velveteen framed in gold. There is an eight-page insert booklet in the box. The insert includes a description of the ornament, and a brief synopsis of Hayes' Presidency. The back of the box is nay blue, with the bar code surrounded in white at the bottom of the box. The words "2004" and "OE-121-005" are on top of the bar code. "Visit www.whitehousehistory.org" is printed below the bar code.Collection
