Description

This is a framed receipt under glass, measuring 10 1/8 in. x 8 1/4 in., from the Canton Auxiliary of McKinley National Memorial Association given to those contributing to the fund to build a suitable memorial for William McKinley in Canton, Ohio. The glass and frame each have a label with a handwritten inventory number "MC-10." The rectangular receipt measures 7 1/2 in. long x 3 3/8 in. high. In the upper right hand corner the receipt is numbered, "No. 947." Centered at the top of the receipt are the following words: "Canton Auxiliary of McKinley National Memorial Association." Centered below the words read "Office At 139 South Market Street. On the left hand side is a list of officers of the Association. They read as follows: "James H. Robertson, Chairman. Frederic S. Hartzell, Secretary. William L. Stolzenbach, Treasurer. Evelyn L. Manchester, Ass't Treasurer To the right is the place and date: "Canton, Ohio, Feb 4 1902." Across the receipt, the following statements read as follows: "This is to Certify, That Geo Guht (hand written) has contributed Fifty Cents (hand written)_____Dollars; (dollars is crossed out) To a fund which is being collected by this Association to be used in the erection of a suitable memorial over the grave of William McKinley, in Canton, Ohio. It is the purpose of the Association to procure a souvenir for each contributor to this fund, and when that is done, the person named in this receipt will be entitled to one copy of same, upon return of this receipt." On the lower right hand corner are signatures reading " William L. Stolzenbach, Treasurer. (typewritten) E.L. Manchester, Assistant Treasurer." (the signature is stamped) The reverse side of the frame is made of cardboard and has a stand attached by a metal hinge for use on a table top or other flat surface. There is a hand written date this item was framed which reads ""Framed 1/4/64." An old library acquisition number is on a white label reading "95.70.2," along with the initials "L. McK.," and the word "Bechtel." A second white label is on the back with initials that read "GA, GRB."
