William McKinley, the twenty-fifth President of the United States, was born in Niles, Ohio on January 29, 1843. The McKinley Memorial was built at the site of the one-room schoolhouse that he attended.
William McKinley, the twenty-fifth President of the United States, was born in Niles, Ohio on January 29, 1843. The McKinley Memorial was built at the site of the one-room schoolhouse that he attended. In 1851, the McKinley family moved to Poland, Ohio in order for the children to attend Poland Academy. McKinley entered the junior class of Allegheny College in Meadville, Pennsylvania at the age of sixteen. He returned home due to illness.
At age eighteen, he served as a postal clerk and taught school. in 1861, McKinley enlisted as a private in the 23rd Regiment of the Ohio Volunteers. He served during the Battles of South Mountain and Antietam. He was made Major by President Lincoln and was discharged in 1865. He studied law, and in Warren, Ohio. He practiced law in Canton, Ohio, and was elected Stark County Prosecuting Attorney from 1869 to 1871.
