American Naval Heroes, Commodore Schley, Envelope Cover, Aug. 5, 1944. The postmark reads, "SCHLEY, MINN. AUG 5 1944 A.M." A three cent purple "COMPLETION OF FIRST TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" stamp is located in the upper right hand corner with the dates 1869, 1944. Black cancellation lines run through the stamp. The envelope is addressed to " Ernest M. Sprandel, 446 [ni] Freeman, St. Kendallville Indiana. Surrounded by a red rope border on the left side, is a black and white sketch of Commodore Schley, facing left, by Walt Lupton. Below the sketch are the words, in black: "Commodore Schley, U.S.N. Commanded Flagship Brooklyn - at Battle of Santiago Cuba, during the Spanish-American War." Above the sketch inside a red banner are the words in red, "American Naval Heroes." The back is plain.
