The back reads: "George Dewey, Admiral of the United States Navy, born in 1837 at Montpelier, Va.; appointed to Naval Academy from Vermont in 1854 and graduated therefrom in 1858. After serving successfully with great distinction in the Naval Department through the Civil War he was commissioned Lieut.-Commander in 1865 and served successfuly on the Steamer Kearsarge and was commissioned Commander in 1872. In 1898 assumed command of the Asiatic Station. He distinguished himself in the Battle of Manila by emerging victoriously without the loss of a single man; was commissioned Rear Admiral of the United States in 1898."Collection
