Scope and Content

William McKinley, President, 100th Birth Anniversary Envelope Cover, Jan. 29, 1943. The postmark reads, "CANTON, OHIO. JAN 29 1943, 4:30 PM." A seven cent black and white "McKINLEY UNITED STATES POSTAGE" stamp is located in the upper right hand corner. "BUY WAR SAVINGS BONDS AND STAMPS" and black cancellation lines run through the stamp. Below this is a square with the words "Pres. Wm. McKinley 100th Anniversary, Jan. 29, 1943, CANTON, OHIO" has been stamped in ink. The envelope has a typed address to: "W. H. Green, % Greens Music Store, Canton, Ohio." A black and white image of McKinley, facing left, is located on the left side with these wordsbelow: "WILLIAM McKINLEY President 1897-1901 Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of his birth at Niles, Ohio, January 29, 1843. Printed from cut used during His Gubernatorial Campaign." Running vertically along the side of the image is a signature that reads "Louis J Elsaesser, Postmaster." The back has the number 25 written in pencil. Two brown lines where the glue has seeped through the envelope, run at angles. Note: Louis J. Elsaesser was appointed Acting Postmaster 11/01/1935, and appointed Postmaster, 04/24/1936.
