McKinley defeated the Democrat William Jennings Byran during the November 5, 1896, election.

To safeguard American interests, McKinley sent the battlehship USS Maine to Havanna, because of rising tension between the two countries and on February 15, 1898, the Maine was exploded while anchored. Two hundred sixty-six of the 354 crewmen were killed, leading the United States to declare war on April 25. The Spanish-American War ended on December 10, 1898, with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. The U.S. came away from the war as a world power.Collection
