A Forgotten President

Chapter 1
William McKinley Jr. was born January 29, 1843, in Niles, Ohio. He was the seventh of nine children born to William and Nancy Allison McKinley. He was called Will by his close family and friends. (Pictures of parents)
Father McKinley ran an iron foundry. He made items like this tea kettle.(picture of tea kettle) Mother McKinley took care of the local Methodist Church.
Niles, is located in Trumbull County in Northeast Ohio. In 1843, it was a rural town with only 300 people. The town was self contained, with several stores and businesses, plus three churches and a school. The only way in and out of town was a man made water way known as a canal and a wagon trail to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The McKinleys lived ina two story wood frame house. Part of the first floor wad a general store. There was no electric or running water in the house. Although life was hard, but the children recieved much love and had a secure home life (it was a secure home with a lot of love.)
