With the war behind him, he entered Albany (New York) School of Law in 1866. While at a party, he was served ice cream. It was the first time he had tasted it. He thought the "custard" had been frozen by mistake. He was 24 later in life hw would laugh about it and say, "I was just a country boy you know." He graduated in 1867.
He passed the Bar Examination in Warren, Ohio.
William was ready to settle down. His sister Anne asked him to come to Canton, Ohio where she lived, He moved there and joined the law firm of George W. Belden in 1867.
