Scope and Content

Again at the battle near Winchester, West Virginia, William showed his bravery, by riding across an open field under heavy fighting to reach an isolated regiment to tell them to retreat, thus saving the lives of the men. The next day he was made Captain of Company G. There were more battles where William showed his talent as a leader. On March 13, 1865, he was commissioned a brevet major by President Lincoln, just before he was released from service. Friends called him Major then on. Although he had been in many battles under heavy fire and did heroic deeds, and had several horses shot out fomr under him, he arrived home without a scratch. just as he had promised his mother before he left.
