Congressman: 1877-1891
January 1877 McKinley took his seat in the 45th Congress in Washington D.C. His special issue was the tariff to protect the new industries of the country. His first speech in Congress was on April 5, 1878 against the Wood Tariff Bill. Everyone was impressed with his skill.
In 1880 McKinley campaigned for James A. Garfield. Garfield was elected President, McKinley was appointed to Garfield's empty seat of the important Ways and Means Committee. By 1884 McKinley was a powerful Cingressman, making strong powerful speeches.
But life doesn't always run smooth. Jonathon H. Wallace, opposed McKinley in 1882, Wallace said he had more votes. After a two year debate on the issue, Wallace was given the seat but the public voted McKinley back to Congress ten months later. by 1890 Wm. won the passage of the McKinley Tariff Bill but lost his seat to John G. Warwick. Plus his favorite sister, Anna died. This was the turning point in his career.Collection
