"PRESIDENT MCKINLEY'S DEATH" BY ETHELBERT ALLEN MOORE. GOLD METAL FRAME. 9" X 12" FRAMED BY LIBRARY.
The poem reads as follows:
"President McKinley's Death
I, restless in my sleep, awake
And knowing not the reason why
Listen to the sounds that break
The stillness as I breathless lie.
Nor do I know the source or power
That bids me feel that not alone,
My spirit in this lonely hour
Dwells in this grief that seems my own.
Unnumbered thousands doubtless lie
Sleepless with a single thought,
Each with a prayer to Him on high
That life, not death, may be his lot.
The ether gives its signal drear
While these encumbered prayers arise,
And the great town bell tolls far and near,
Peaceful in death the President lies.
