Reinhold 2302 11th Street N.W. Canton, Ohio Dear Sir and Brother: I am sending you a MAsonic working tool. May I delegate you to present this gift to William McKinley Lodge, Number 431, F. and A.M. of your city. This gift is a setting maul for use as a gavel. The head of this gavel is shaped from armor plate taken from the gun turrets of the Battleship Oregon, famous "Bulldog of the United States Fleet." The handle was turned from Oregon Myrtlewood. Myrtlewood is mentioned in the Scriptures and can be found growing only in Palestine and on the Oregon Coast in Coos and Curry Countys. As you probably know, I was born at Canton 64 years ago, on the old Whiting farm. President McKinley knew me better than I knew him. Many times as a drove the dairy herd along the road, Candidate MCKinley passed by with his wife, mother, and sister. The future President of the United States would josh me about my regular chore of taking the cows to water in West Nemoshilo Creek. Brother Harry W. Smith, Vice President and General Manager of Isaacson Iron Works, and myself send this gift, hoping it may be placed among the records in the archives of your lodge. A symbol of work well done inasmuch as the 'Old Oregon' was commissioned during William McKinley's term as President of the United States. Please feel free to engrave this token in any way your Lodge deems fitting and proper. Fraternally yours, E.D. Bufmyer Mt. Hood Lodge No. 32 F. & A.M. Vancouver, Washington 1140 Elizabeth Street Seattle 8, Washington." The back is blank.
