Scope and Content

Letter to Fred Schmalzreidt from H. Rittra. The letter reads as follows: "Detroit Aug. 29, 1898 Dear Friend Fred Your last letter was received on the 8nist and I think I better answer it or you might feel offended. You must excuse me Fred. I want to put my application in for clerk or career in government service and it takes all the time I have to plan. Beside that I am on the committee to arrange for the Basket Picnic. I tell you it keeps me hustling all the time. Yesterday there was a crowd of us out to Eense on our wheels one of the girls had a friend out there in a boathouse nd we had a hell of a time. I suppose the boys do not like the idea of our being over so soon. It is to bad they didn't give you fellows z whack at it. Suppose you would rather come home than hang around camp since the war is over. The thirty fifth was in the parade here last Thursday. They were leading they parade and made very good showing themselves. Suppose you boys are getting fat nowadays lieing around doing nothing most of the time. I must congratulate you for being an uncle we will have to call you Uncle Fred now. Tell Ed not to forget me and write soon. I will close now. I am tired. So Best regards to all from all Your friend Wm Rittra"
