2010.1.1744Description
The item is a framed reproduction portrait of President William McKinley. The portrait was taken from a photograph by Pach Brothers, August 1899. It has William McKinley's name beneath it and the caption, "Twenty-fourth President of the United States" which is the wrong title. William McKinley was the 25th President. McKinley is sitting down in a chair while wearing a suit and a hat. There is another caption below the reproduction that says, "This picture is a reproduction of a photograph of Mr. McKinley taken during his third year of service as President. He was at the time seated on the lawn before the vine-covered villa of Vice-President Hobart at Long Beach, New Jersey. It is regarded as the best photograph portrait of the martyred President ever taken. He was at that time in his fifty-seventh year, and at the height of his popularity and usefulness. One year later he was re-elected to the Presidency, and two years later he was slain by the bullet of the assassin Czolgosz."Collection
