Mr. Bechtel has written on the mat near the top envelope:
"This mourning cover was postmarked in Washington, D.C. on Sept.28, 1901 /4 P.M. Note return address of "Executive Mansion"
Under the second envelope and to the left of the third envelope Mr. Bechtel wrote the following:
" All government offices used mourning envelopes for some time following the death of President McKinley. The center cover (above) is from the Treasury Department and postmarked in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 9, 1901 /12M.
The cover at right is a mourning envelope from the Pan-American Exposition were President McKinley was shot. It is interesting to note that there are two cancellations, one Buffalo, New York Mar. 19, 1900 /4 P.M. and the other Pan American Exposition 1901."
The back reads as follows:
"Property of George R. Bechtel McKinleyana Collection"
"1417 Brooklyn Ave. S.W. Canton, Ohio"
A typed note taped to the center of the back reads as follows:
