The tour lasts approximately 31 days, during which the band performs in roughly 29 cities. The tradition of the Marine Band tour began in 1891 under 17th Director John Philip Sousa. History of the Marine Band Tour Where the Marine Band Tours The Department of Defense divides the continental United States into five touring areas available for the four premier service bands. Regions within these areas are selected approximately one year in advance. Use the map below to view the five Department of Defense touring areas. National Tour Area Map Select an Area Why sponsor the Marine Band? Bringing the Marine Band to your city or town is a great opportunity for your organization to give back to the community. These free concerts, presented by the same musicians who perform at the White House, attract capacity crowds and provide valuable public exposure for the sponsoring organization. Who sponsors the Marine Band? The Marine Band National Tour Director plans the tour itinerary and contacts local organizations for sponsorship. The organizations must have the capability to provide a suitable concert site, publicize the performance, and distribute free tickets. Sponsors typically are schools and universities, newspapers, radio and television stations, civic and educational organizations, chamber of commerce and local governments. Who is the Sponsor? The official sponsor(s) is the organization that signs the Marine Band Tour Appearance Agreement. Are there any restrictions? Fundraising activities or other collections in connection with Marine Band tour appearances are prohibited. The Marine Band will not participate in any event that directly or indirectly benefits, appears to benefit, or favor any private individual, commercial venture, sect, political or fraternal group. The band will not be associated with solicitation of funds or solicitation of votes in an election. What does the Sponsor provide? Marine Band concerts must be presented free of admission. Transportation, food, and lodging are the responsibility of the United States Marine Corps. The sponsor is responsible for providing all local support to include, securing a concert site, managing a publicity campaign, facilitating the printing and distribution of tickets and concert programs, providing ushers for the concert, and coordinating with local security to guard the concert site, Marine Band, and patrons. 2016 Tour Itinerary The 2016 tour will be Oct. 1-30 in the southeast area of the United States.
