Envelope addressed to "Mr. Fred Schmalzriedt Co. I 32 Nat. Mich. Vols. Huntsville, Ala. Tampa, Florida." This is V-mail. The envelope is of a United States flag. The return address under the field of stars on the left of the envelope reads "From H. Ritter 32 Gillman Ave. Detroit Michigan." The postmark reads "Detroit, Mich ug 30 1130 AM Sta 73." The cancellation consists of a one inch football-shaped mark with stripes at the top and bottom, and a dark area in the center with a numeral one in a circle. There is a red onecent stamp with an image of George Washington in the upper right corner of the envelope. The following is written across the bottom of the envelope: "Detroit Merchandise Co. Furniture, Carpets, Stoves, Etc., 223-225 Gratiot Ave."
The back of the envelope is white, with an extension of the front design around the edges. There is a partially legible postmark on the bottom, which reads in part: "Sep 3 1898 Rec'd." Another postmark near the top reads "Huntsville, Ala. Sep 3 5 ?? PM 1898 Rec'd."Collection
