Elizabeth McIntosh’s (b.1967, Simcoe, Ontario) paintings are reactionary. They begin without a plan. Once the artist makes a gesture on the canvas, the next one is created in response to the first. From there, any compositional addition, such as a successive brushstroke or a colour choice, becomes part of a visual conversation between the artist of the past and the artist at present. If a previous creative decision does not appeal to her in the present, McIntosh replies by painting over it or adding something new to fix it. There is no going back, only moving forward. Her process turns the act of painting into a thought that gets carried away. The paintings are not improvised or thought out, rather they represent a mind that wanders during the creative process.
McIntosh is currently based out of Vancouver. She received an Honours Bachelor of Fine Art from York University in Toronto and a Master of Fine Arts from Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. Her works can be found in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
