Mitch Robertson (b.1974, Woodstock, Ontario) is a concept artist who uses photography, video, sculpture, the Internet, installations and drawing to create works that both celebrate and condemn tourism, globalization and consumerism.
Star Values (2014) is a series of hand-coloured prints taken from an astrology atlas from the 1890s. Depicted in each are stars and constellations overlaid with the corresponding longitudinal and latitudinal lines printed by the artist. Robertson colours each section of the grid based on a value such as the brightness of a star or the number of stars in one. The choice of colours follows Sir Issac Newton’s hierarchy of colours in which warm colours like red, then orange and yellow denote a higher importance or value than cooler colours like green, blue or violet. Robertson uses the same image six times with different criteria to highlight how information and ideas can be interpreted to suit a goal. Like the practice of writing history, his works parallel the variety of information that can be established from a single source.
Robertson currently lives and works in Toronto. Robertson began exhibiting in 1998 and has shown across Canada and New Zealand, as well as in the USA, Switzerland, Northern Ireland, England, Germany, Scotland and Australia. His work is included in numerous public, corporate and private art collections nationally and internationally.Artwork Details
