Description

Colleen Heslin (b.1976; Toronto, Ontario) is a visual artist known for her use of textile-based methods of painting. Using ink, dyes, collage, thread, textiles, and other sculptural elements, her hand-stitched and hand-dyed abstract artworks resemble the texture of painted canvases. For Heslin, the use of textile, a medium which has been associated with the labour of women, redefines and liberates painting as a creative practice. It pushes the classification of the medium to create a conversation about the history of painting as it relates to gender and labour. Heslin received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University in 2003 and an MFA from Concordia University in 2014. Her work is found in the collections of the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Musee d'art Contemporain de Montreal, and Simon Fraser University. https://colleenheslin.com/
